Clearly I agree with the sentiment expressed that it's better to go find out that one doesn't want to negotiate a road/trail, than just assume it's bad. Had I been willing to work on that washout for an indeterminate time with a small shovel, I could have passed that point -- but I wasn't. Also, the Kelly Point road could (probably) have been done -- given enough time. But I had already spend 2 hours going ~3 miles, and had another 20 +- to go. And having to drive back was the final nail. Plus I was about 100 miles from pavement.
Criteria for a successful trip:
1) didn't hurt myself or anyone else. Check.
2) didn't break anything, even a flat tire. Check.
3) had a lot of fun. Mostly check.
4) learned a good deal about the area. Check.
