TR: roaming the Parashant

Here are some pictures from a recent trip to the Grand Canyon Parashant, which is in the western part of the Arizona Strip on the north rim.
Details, the full story, and a more complete set of larger pictures are here .
If anyone wonders why this was my first trip this year, part of the answer is here .

Here was my 'grand tour' plan, for 10-12 days.

I underestimated the time needed to traverse several of the rough roads encountered, and actually only made 2 of the stops indicated.

First planned stop was the east bank of Lake Mead. That plan ended here.

Boulders thwarted any 'go around' thought.

Leading me the this opinion:

Next was the road to Kelly Point

Where, I'm embarrassed to admit, I had to use a jack to get the rear differential off of a rock.

So, day 1 result: roads 2, me 0.

The Twin Point road was a lot easier, leading to a better result.

And a little celebration --

Next stop, Whitmore Canyon Overlook

Which had it's own challenges.

Must be close -- there's the Colorado

'Lake Colorado' would have been a real sight to see.

At the overlook

There's a foot trail -- to the river?

Starting down the trail --

I don't like the looks of this

On the trail

This is what a lot of the trail looked like -- which explains my sore thighs at the bottom of a short trail.

Missed sticking my foot in the river by that much.

That's all. It's a spectacular place that deserves more time and planning than I gave it (this time). That road washout could have been surmounted, if I had been willing to do a lot of work. The Kelly Point road is really very rough -- probably better for jeeps. But it would be doable with a lot more time. Took me 2+ hours for less than 3 miles, and there were at least 20 more to go.
Hope you enjoyed the pictures, and thanks for looking.
  • Cal

Great trip report, well written and great pictures too. Thank You for posting them.
  • Have you ever been to Toroweep (sp)? you would like it

Sure have. The Toroweap road is much easier than some of the Parashant view point roads.

Why would you be embarrassed that you had to use a jack to get the differential off of a rock??

Because I put the wheels in the wrong place.

Reminds me of hiking with Seldomseen

And speaking of Seldomseen, he certain is. Where is he?
