Tracking Trips

I know I could probably find it here if I searched hard enough, but will take the easy route by asking.
How would one track his trips, specifically with some kind of device that you could come back to.
I know you can set GPS points, but I would love to have a map/road based system.
Like I'm planning a fishing trip to Michigan for trout and might want to go back another year.
Having a detailed "map" of where I've been would be great.
Any Ideas?

  • I've had a SPOT tracker since they first came out in 2007. It'll run you about $150 @ year, but in addition to tracking your travels, family/friends you allow can see where you are as well, even outside of cell coverage. The main features are, it has "help" and "911" buttons to summon the appropriate response. Great piece of mind when boondocking, backpacking, off roading, etc...

    Nope.

I use a Garmin GPS and their mapping software to plan trips and record a track log of them.
  • If you have a GPS for navigation like a Garmin Nuvi, you can download the tracks from it and view them later on their free application Base Camp.

The DW highlights our trips in a thing called a Atlas using different color markers plus she puts a date where we stay. Makes it a lot easier to decide where we have not been when planning a trip. Buy it good sprial bound one as ours is over 13 years old... lots of memories. Yes we are over 65 but I'm using a smartphone to write this.
  • Thanks Buzz!

It's a honor to get a response from you!
I've been lurking here for years before I got my TC, and recognize you from reading your trip reports and answering peoples questions.

I wish to thank you for your contributions to this wonderful forum and hope my meager participation will help others also.

  • geotracker for android will do it and you can import the map to google earth if you save it in the KMZ format
