So everything added together we are at roughly 5500 lbs (1600 lbs under the max towing), not including human beings.
You need to weigh the trailer! You are just guessing about the weight! You could very easily be towing considerably more than your guess.
Sometimes when I floor the accelerator and will get no more than 2500 rpm on a level surface.
This is probably your biggest problem. If the truck does not produce enough power, you will feel like you are towing a lot more than you actually are.
I am starting to wonder if it is related to the trailer brakes. I’m thinking that there is a build-up of brake fluid in the line that isn’t releasing the pressure fully after releasing the brakes. The more I use the brakes (like in city driving), the more the brake fluid builds up and puts pressure on the brakes, causing them to continue to rub and create resistance after the brakes have been released on my end.
Your trailer has electric breaks (unless it is an extremely rare version) and does not have any brake fluid. Electric brakes can drag, and the brake controller can cause the brakes to engage when not needed. A simple test when you feel this excessive drag while towing is to briefly pull the plug from the truck thereby disengaging the brakes. Just start moving and you will know if trailer brakes are the issue.DO NOT TOW AT ANy SPEED WITH THE PLUG NOT CONNECTED!)
