Trailer wiring issues

Hello again folks! Here's my problem: when dragging my bumper pull down the road, sometimes I lose my trailer brakes. This happened with my old truck and my new one. I took the truck to the shop the other day for some unrelated matters and had them look over it. They said they could not get it to duplicate, so it must be the camper (which makes sense because it did it on the old truck too). I don't even know where to begin to try to track down the problem. Any help?

Thanks in advance

  • This can happen sometimes, if the wires inside the axle get chaffed, causing a temporary loss of brakes, due to rubbed wire touching the axle. The brake loss will come and go as the wires are bounced around.

Just one of many brake issues, but a common one.

  • I had this happen on my previous TH... I traced the brake wiring underneath the TH and discovered insulation worn through at the axle. particularly where the wires entered the axle tube to cross over to the other side. movement caused the wiring to short, this was detected by the brake controller.
