Transmission cooler

Hi all,

Transmission cooler? Is that stock on an Excursion? Towing a Cougar 31sqbwe. We recently added air bags to the rear of the Ex. Thinking of going from 373 to 410. Right now the trailer stays at Lake Camanche. This summer I want to go up into the Sierras and don't want any issues.
Thanks!
  • Depending on the model of Excursion it comes with different sized transmission coolers I believe. My V10 has a 10 row cooler, and I am looking into swapping it out for a 6.0 cooler (32 rows I believe). I had my transmission up to 230 a few times this summer crawling up twisting mountain roads.

If its the 4R100 i would definitely pull the stock transmission cooler, and add the 6.0 transmission cooler. If its a late 2003 or newer you should be good to go.

The 99-early 03 Ex did not have an adequate transmission cooler.
  • Our '04 excursion has an external oil cooler that came on itfrom the factory. Our last TT was just over 8000 lb and the trans never got hot in the mountains, or at 75 in overdrive. We also had 4X4 with the 373 rear ends.

I've used the Ford Truck VIN decoder. I have a class IV towing package. Doesn't say if that includes a transmission cooler. Some have said that it does include the transmission cooler but those are small. Some have upgraded to a bigger cooler. I'm thinking along those lines. Our Ex is a 2000 Limited. I love her!

It does not have to be huge. But it will be external. Most vehicle cool the transmission thru the radiator. so the line from the trany will run to the radiator. On the other side of the Radiator will be another {return} line. IF it runs straight back to the trany, It does not have a external cooler. If it runs to a cooler , and then back to the trany, Good to go. The trany cooler should always be after the radiator, so that the fluid can be cooled lower then the radiator.
A good tow package will also include a power steering cooler as well. It will be on the opposite side of the vehicle.

    Concur !

My daughter's family bought their first TT about a year ago. TV is a 2012 Expedition. Of course the TT salesman said "No problem, you can tow up you 9,000 lbs !" True, with optional HD tow package !!

They had the local Ford dealer install the HD Radiator and auxiliary transmission cooler. They did NOT change the axle ratio (4wd) but the 6 speed, in tow/haul mode, went through the Smokies no problem (I think the TT is about 7,000 lbs loaded).
  • Look at transmission...follow lines from/to transmission and see it there is a cooler up front.

Not knowing which Excursion you have....hard to tell if it came with optional tow package

A quick stop by dealer parts dept with VIN and they can tell you WHAT options it has
