Traveling with Spare Fuel - Where to Store?

How many of you travel with spare fuel for your TV? I'm sure for most of you with pickups, there is a pretty simple solution...toss a can in the truck bed. I have an SUV. Where would you recommend I store spare fuel? The front hitch area is too tight to fit a gas can. I thought of may be mounting a Jerry can on the rear bumper, but was curious what others do.

During my research for a can thats the right size I came across pre-packaged spare fuel, which is an interesting concept. Super expensive, but you can toss a jug in the pass thru storage and be done. I have to wonder how long it'd be good for though.

I don't get overly concerned about a lot of things, and though I've seen them, I wouldn't mount a gas can down low on the rear bumper of a TT. If someone rear ends you, that gas is going to spray all over everything including any sparks...........

  • I would suggest checking the state regulations for carrying portable fuel containers.

I have carried them in my trunk many times, but I'm permitted to do that here. I just ensure that they are sealed tight and not overfilled.
  • Never carry extra fuel. No need to. Always camp at electric supplied campgrounds and never very far from a gas station. No need for a generator, and no space in my rig for an ATV.

I suggest you get a good gas can that seals tight. You can put it in the trailer pass through. But you would not want it in there when you are occupying the camper once camped. One drop of fuel in the camper (anywhere) and you'll have a stink for a long time!
  • APT, we must be brothers from another mother. I just realized you have a VW as well. I've owned like 6 passats. I guess I have to upgrade to the Suburban to keep pace with you.
  • Get that 3/4 ton Burb for 39 gallon fuel tank! :p Sorry, not much help for you as I don't carry extra fuel. I appreciate your concerns though as my last TV had 160-200 mile tank range. If I had to carry extra fuel, I'd bungee a 5 gallon container to the trailer A-frame/tongue somewhere.
