I think it is inadvisable offering a winch for people who are not experienced in its use. Anyone who had a safe level of winching knowledge would have spotted the problem, but the combination of someone with no winching knowledge, a faulty winch and a steel winch rope rather than synthetic is a combination I don't want to stand too close to.
