Trip Report: Starve Hollow SRA in Indiana
I've been waiting a lot of years to be able to finally do a trip report for you guys. While this wasn't much of a grand adventure it is still nice to be able to contribute. This was our first family outing with a camper. We are complete novices when it comes to camping with a truck camper and have never even stayed in a camp ground before. We decided to keep our maiden voyage close to home.
We went to the Starve Hollow State Rec Area which is only about 20 minutes from home. They had great lake front electric only sites. They also have full service sites but that loop is away from the lake.
We got the camper packed up with supplies and loaded up the 2 and 4 year olds along with our watch dog Duke and headed out friday evening.
Here is the camp site we chose.

I initially set up the camper on a bit too much of a grade and the rear of the camper was very high off the ground while the truck was still not quite level. I eventually moved the rig about 5 feet farther foreward and it was a little better there but he rear was still too high off the ground to make for an easy entry and exit. Lesson learned, get a level of a site as possible right off the bat.

I got busy building a fire while Susan fired up the oven and stove for dinner. Evan was facinated by the smoke until the wind changed a bit and he got a face full of it. This was his first campfire experience.

Our first family meal in the camper was a resounding success.

Duke was jealous of our good vittles.

After dinner we all sat around the fire while watching some geese land on the lake nearby.

Eventually we decided to get settled in for our first night in the camper. Ross was excited to sleep on the top bunk. He has slept on the dinette bunk several times in our driveway but had not been up top yet. This was Evan's first night ever in the camper and we were concerned that he might not sleep very well but he slept soundly through the night.

The next morning we went for a little walk and then broke came because we had an appointment with a friend who lives nearby. Ross was excited to find out that he would get to ride a horse for the very first time today.

Evan was a bit scared of the horses and eventually petted one of them but refused to get on the saddle. He was more than happy to run around wearing a riding helmet though.

All in all it was a great first trip even though it was way too short. A few lessons were learned and we look forward to our next weekend get away in May. That one is scheduled to be two nights in a row at a State Park up in northern Indiana for a Geocaching event. Hope you enjoyed my first attempt at a trip report. I have enjoyed reading everyones TRs through the past few years.
