Trouble with a Titan XD

The Nissan Titan XD is not a "1/2 ton" per its GVWR which is what determines if is a "1/2 ton" or "3/4 ton". In fact, it has a GVWR 8,600-8,990 lbs depending on the configuration which just 210 lbs less than 9,200 lbs GVWR of a 2009 GM 2500HD. My friends 2002 GM 2500HD has a GVWR of 8,600 lbs. Is his is 2500HD considered a "1/2 ton"?
If all you go by are numbers more power to ya. Crawl up under each truck and you'll see obvious differences that IMO still puts it in 1/2 ton category by todays standards not 15 yrs ago.
