Trouble with a Titan XD
This is the worst review that I have seen so far on the Titan diesel. I hope that it is an isolated case: http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2016-nissan-titan-xd-long-term-test-review

Former Tundra owner here.
Toyota build a 3/4 ton? Why? The big sales numbers are in the 1/2 ton class. Makes no sense to invest 100's of millions to compete in the 3/4 ton class against the big 3 that are serving that segment nicely and have a big, loyal following. In summary, the numbers just aren't there and Toyota has recognized this for many years.
I'm sure you are right, but I would buy one in a heartbeat if they made one. I loved my Tundra, the 5.7 and transmission were fantastic and provided plenty of power. The brakes always felt firm. Factory E rated tires provided plenty of stability.
Another 1000 lbs of payload and a gas tank that holds 10 or 15 more gallons of gas would have been perfect for me. But, alas... such a beast doesn't exist.
Yeah, loved mine too. But realistically, how much market share could Toyota expect to grab? 10% ?? Less?? Would it be worth the investment? I doubt it.
First thing Toyota would face is all the "Toy Truck" comments like they did with the Tundra. Maybe after 5 years of service and people seeing they hold up, people might start buying them.
All the offerings from the Big 3 are really quite good so I don't see room for a 4th player.
I think it is pretty easy to argue that Toyota really isn't competitive even in the 1500 series market. They can't have much more than 10% marketshare there.
