One of the things that I have done over the years is when the system is getting close the air is almost cold enough but not quite. When the low side pressure (assuming you're not using a gauge set) is pretty close feel the air. Usually it just takes a squirt to get it good and cold and then confirm that the pressure is within limits on the gauge. I have a gauge set but, I have done it with a cheap low side gauge so many times I have a feel for it. I keep a low side gauge and a extra can handy on road trips just in case. Cold air never goes out of fashion.
