Traveling with a very economical car and staying at inexpensive motels is the cheapest way to go. With a camper that has a shower you need a heavy duty truck that can handle 4,000 lbs. in the bed and gas mileage will be around 10 MPG. Add in $25 a night at RV parks and public campgrounds on average.
A trailer will have a lot more room than any camper and this includes the bath and shower and the capacity of the holding tanks. The smaller the trailer the less powerful a tow vehicle is needed and the less gas you will burn.
Not wanting to use the shower and bath facilities at campgrounds is where you shoot yourselves in the feet. We prefer to use these facilities to trying to use the shower and sink in the camper and we are already paying for the hot water in the campsite fee. Many people with large 5th-wheel trailers and motorhomes like to keep the bath pristine and will use the ones at campgrounds for that reason. Do you realize that the bathrooms in the motels are not going to be anymore sanitary than the ones in a campground?
