Truck Camper with Built in Genset?

I'm considering swapping my TT for a truck camper. However having a Gen Set is important to us.

Do they make a truck camper with a gen set? maybe one that runs on propane and enough power to run the AC?

OR,

Somewhere to store a genset such as a couple of Honda 2KW that I could run in tandem?

Thanks!

  • My 2002 Lance 1130 has a generator built in, mine is a Generac, some were outfitted with the Onan generator. Mine is very handy its got a push button to start and stop the generator from inside the camper. Neither brand generator is as quiet as a Honda, and my guess is they are not as light weight, nor efficient, meaning you would probably get longer run time from a Honda on gasoline vs the Generac on propane. With the built in generator (mine at least) runs on propane, and there is no need to bring gasoline.
All that said, when this generator displays any problems, I will be seriously considering removing it and going to a Honda or Honda like generator, and changing to the latest A/C unit to be able to run on the 2000.

Our Northern Lite 10-2 CD has a built in Onan generator that is fueled by propane and can power our air conditioner. A Honda portable would probably be cheaper to buy and quieter. But our camper, when we bought it used, had the Onan. We are spoiled by the convenience, especially the pushbutton start, and would not want to trade for a portable.
  • most truck campers have smaller AC's than big campers. I think my Arctic Fox 990 was a 9K btu? it ran off my Honda 2K. I could store the Honda 2K in the back cabinet under the ladder on my 990. I think the northstar had a cabinet you could put a honda 2K in and run it in the cabinet.

I would not buy a generator on a truck camper, I would use a 2000-3500 portable.
on board generators are heavy and you can't leave them at home. They suck propane. they vibrate the camper body, and you can't put them out in teh bushes at the end of the cord to make them quieter.

Yes. A number of manufacturers make campers with built in generators.

My AF990 has one. Simple one button start/stop. Runs on propane and has an automatic transfer switch.
  • If they would fit a generator and large propane tanks will severely your storage. I’d go with a Micro Air and one 2000 generator.
  • No reason for 2 Honda gen sets, install MicroAir on the AC and run it with 1 Honda 2000i.
