If you are coming out, you should camp in the Valley at least a night or three. But to emphasize what others have said, in the summer you will need reservations, and very often these fill up within minutes of opening. So check the opening date for the reservations you are interested in, and plan to dial or hit the reserve button instantly.
I don't believe that 25% (or any) of the valley floor campsites are first come - all are reserved. That is true of Tuolumne Meadows though. We were just there in mid April, made the reservations for the valley in January, and got the last available spot. Much more crowded in mid summer.
