Yes, the first or last few weeks of the season are best.
You don't have to 'do' anything in Yosemite, if you don't want to. It's so beautiful you can just sit and look all day :). Or there are zillions of hikes and drives to chose from, including plenty of mellow, flat hikes. It's a great palace for people of all abilities.
Go make your reservations now. They just opened up for fall.
