IMHO, best time to go is actually May 15-June 15 when the waterfalls are at their peak. Going to Yosemite in the fall is kind of sad because the falls are just a trickle.
We were just there on May 1 and it was 74F in the valley -- perfect. We were going to do some dispersed camping off of Evergreen road near the north entrance, but our dog got sick and we had to make it a day trip without the camper. We went early this year because the snow was basically gone and the waterfalls were going to start drying up.
Tons of hiking options with that range. We went to Clark Point on the John Miur trail up towards Nevada falls. It's crowded, but a must-do.
