Truck Camping on the ragged edge

My new truck and camper.

My old truck and camper in Georgia.

Old truck and camper got about 14 mpg on the highway.

My new truck and camper gets better than 20 mpg.
Present tank full reads 23.2 mpg.

Wow that really opens things up for me!
It still has a 382 mile range, all that and the tank only holds 26 gallons.

Main things I disliked about the old truck and camper.

Whenever we had to camp around most dog owners.
Long cold evenings cooped up in the camper.

Things I may dislike about the new camper.

It sure is small.

Down sizing can open doors. Less money spent on a RV can mean more money for travel.

We have found long cold evenings can be fun in a hotel with a pool and hot tub.

My new rig is small but a night or two in it then a night in a motel can be nice.
We started truck camping that way then went to the Lance. Now smaller again.

Oh yes we tried this Jeep Patriot and tent on top trailer.
Alas it was a lot of work for this old goat.

So now it's just 17.6 feet of total length.

My wife has a dear lady friend who drove the Pan American Highway. She has a husband whose thinking about it.

  • I guess non of you guys snore at night?
I figured it long years ago that having your own toilet with you is irreplaceable, while having a shower every night is making day and night difference.
    YMMV

Well it's l little longer than 5.5 feet.
My 75 inch long air mattress fits but touches each end.
Being taller than 75 inches I already needed to bend my knees to fit the mattress.
    No change in the truck.

Most RV queen sized beds are 74 inches by 60 inches and would fit my truck(Camper) fine.

Failing that something like this would help in the length department.
  • Too right on your username!

Now you've got me thinking we should hold onto our Nissan Pathfinder. Rear folds flat and I have slept back there.

    Enjoy the new rig.

Knees up. Or do it redneck style...cut a pair of 6" holes in the tailgate. :)
  • languiduck,
You KNOW the happy answer to your question!! :B :E
  • I think I may be facing the same situation. Downsized from a BHS bumper pull, and now thinking that maybe the S & S just isn't getting used enough. 3x in last year is kinda hard to justify keeping a fairly new (07) Dodge 4x4 QC 3500 SRW 6.7 CTD just to haul it around.
  • I wouldn't say a night here and there in a motel/hotel is exactly "truck camping on the ragged edge"

Glad you're happy with your new setup.
