Truck Camping With Cats

We're out in the TC mixing work and play. We've got our two cats with us; Kahlua, a brown 15 year old "senior cat", and Selina, a tortoise-shell who is technically still a kitten since she's only 11 months old. Kahlua has always been a very small cat. She might have weighed 6.5 lbs when she was in her prime, but now tips the scales at about 5 lbs. Selina came to us as a two-week old orphan that only weighed 6 oz's, and needed to be bottle fed.

This was her first taste of solid food.

She is now a full 10 lbs, and appears to have leveled off.

We had a little bed strapped to the center console that they would ride in, but as Selina grew, she was finding it harder and harder to stay within its bounds.

The boss recently bought a bigger bed, and I got it strapped to the console just before we left on this trip.

Selina appreciates the extra room.

The cats get along OK, for the most part. Selina wants to play more than Kahlua wants to, so we let them interact as much as possible but occasionally have to separate them just to give Kahlua some peace. Here's one of their good moments. It took a little encouragement from the boss for Kahlua to go along.

Being older, Kahlua likes to sleep even more than cats usually do. Selina gets impatient with her, and tries to stir things up a bit.

"Hey, whatcha doin Kahlua?"

"Are ya sleepin???"

"Yes I'm sleeping! Leave me alone you pest!"

Selina takes it all in stride though, and lets the boss take her out for a little leash training.

Our camp spot for the night.

  • Our first trip with our loving cat went just fine until we forgot to close the screen door. We did not know what to do when she sauntered down and went into the Oregon salal shrubbery. Frantic was not the word. After about 45 minutes we spotted her three sites away, but then gone again. I went back to just sit and wait it out. After 90 minutes she shot out of the salal, up the TC steps and smacked into the screen trying to get back in. She has never been out again, but comes with us every time for up to 5 weeks at least once.
  • Nice to see responsible people with their cat on a leash. I've had neighbors complain about their cat disappearing or coming home injured. I ask if it was on a leash and they say NO a cat isn't like a dog, they are a free spirit and need to roam. Duuuhhh, cant fix stupid. Your cats are lucky to be with you.
  • Nice looking pair! The last time I went camping with a cat was as a kid. We brought our siamese and he got out of the trailer and went up a tree right before we were headed home. Spent several hours waiting for him to come down.

Oh, and then there was the time we headed out for a camping trip and when we stopped for gas we found our deaf cat on the roof of the TC....
