IH trucks come standard with Maxforce (IH) engines with Cummins as an option. IH has been building quality engines for years and years.

If Ford would have used an IH standard engine there would have been no problems. But the Ford execs figured they knew more about diesel engines than IH and ordered modifications to "build a better mousetrap".
You don't see Ram telling Cummins how to build engines. They are smart enough to leave that to the experts!!!
