Personally, I wouldn't buy any 2010 or newer diesel. The emissions equipment is absurd and equally absurdly expensive to replace, not to mention the regular engine parts. Of course, somebody stole all my emission stuff. Went out one day, popped the hood, and it was all gone. What's weird is they left it so it would still pass a smog check. Strange.
I would probably go with a gasser just for ease of maintenance and lower cost on repairs. With a diesel, in the long term, it's really only cheaper if you perform your own maintenance and repairs.
Unless you enjoy tinkering on the engine, I would stay away from the 6.0 and 6.4 PSD. For a lot of years Ford didn't offer adequately powered engines for towing/hauling except the V-10. But that thing got TERRIBLE mileage. So people were forced to get into the diesel market. Now, for the first time in a long time, Ford has a decent engine line-up for their truck line. The 6.2 is a solid motor. For the intended purpose, I think you'd be wasting money by purchasing another diesel.
And you're correct, with the cost of another diesel purchase, MPG will not offset the higher initial price and maintenance, unless you're buying it to use as an everyday work truck, which it sounds like you are not.
Should I consider a one ton gasser? I am not convinced the better mpg of the diesel will offset the higher purchase price, maintenance, and price per gallon. But will a gasser struggle to carry the weight?
