To the OP, is your truck the true 2500 or a 2500HD. If it is the 2500HD, a trade for a 1 ton SRW is a waste of money.
I drove a '06 6.0 PSD for almost 8 years. I did have one turbo repacement under warranty ... it rusted the vanes together. I consider that my fault for not adding the additive that I knew was required with lots of short drives. I have a 6.4 now in the '10. There are known problems with them as well. I bought a '10 to give them time to work out the "issues" just like I bought a '06 6.0 instead of a '03 or '04.
To future proof yourself, if you can get by with a DRW, buy one. Yes, it is get by with because there are real disadvantages of having a bigger heavier truck.
As far as brands go, when I bought my '06, Ford was significantly ahead on payload, but if you look around '08 GM caught up and Dodge is caught up by now. Engine wise, it is whatever problems you want to deal with respect to diesel. They all have some issues but they are all pretty solid.
In my own searching, I really wanted the stronger 19.5s and the gearing to haul a big fifth wheel for some time in the future which is why I bought what I did.
I considered a Gasoline engine, but in the F450s, the mileage is pretty horrible and cut into my range way too much. For just hauling a camper, gasoline would be fine for even occasional trips over the larger mountain ranges. Those of us who regularly go over significant mountains tend toward diesel.
