Not sure where those reviews come from, but the Ecoboost has way more low-end torque than the 5L or even the 6.2L in the SuperDuty's. That's what you want when towing/hauling (not HP at 5000rpm or whatever), and it is definitely noticed.
As for mileage, I suspect it's more of a toss up between the 5L and Eco when towing the same thing, the same way. But the Eco does have much more power reserve (low-end torque) and if you use that extra power (jack-rabbit starts), you will pay.
