Truck mounted air compressor

I have aired up my airbags with a bicycle pump before, by the way. It took about 30 seconds each. If you want a compressor for high pressure tires, the requirements for air volume are way behind what it takes for the air bags. Still, on board air is definitely very useful if you get a big enough pump.

I have been using this inexpensive Q Industries model MV50 for years here... I can sit it on the tail gate of the truck and connect into the trailer 12V batteries... Great for topping off tires. The long coiled hose will get to the trailer tires and truck tires when sitting on the truck dropped tail gate... This is a TANKLESS type model... I store it under my truck rear seat area...

I would imagine having a tank would be better for airing up tires ...

This probably would not be a good one for your use idea...

This one comes with a nice carry case... Being portable it fits in well with my tent camping trips too... Airs up my lawn mower tires too... All four tires always flat when I want to mow the yard...

Well our new to us 2016 TV doesn't have On Board Air, and I miss it already!!
On the 2001 Ram I installed a PacBrake exhaust brake, and it cam with a good 150 psi 12V compressor, used it for Tires, and running my brad drivers.

In addition to filling tires, another advantage to having a good sized air tank as part of the system is that it should let you run an air gun for changing tires if you need to.

In short, Duty Cycle is the amount of time that a compressor can be run in a full cycle (typically one hour) that includes the compressor’s run time and rest time. Select VIAIR compressors are equipped with a thermal overload protector to protect the unit in case of over duty cycle or high temperature operation.

I have a 2012 F250. We installed air bags when we got our new 2013 camper, without a compressor. I kept a tire inflator under the back seat witch was fine in warm weather. So last year I had a compressor installed on the passenger side of the engine compartment, just in back of the battery. Keeps things cleaner and easier to service or change if necessary. Mounted the gage under the steering column, to the right, just under the passenger airbag cut off key switch. Parts and labor were about $1000 for a single system. It was too expensive with a dual system. I am not crazy about the fragility of the connections into the bags and to the junction where the air splits to both sides, but we have had no problems so far. We have a 3000 lb. 10' camper and keep the bags at 75 lbs. Having the compressor makes things easier, but was not a big problem except for snow or salt or ice was on the 2 inflation points.

Find a buddy that has one of those cheap compressors from Canadian tire that has piled up. Peel the compressor off of the tank and mount it under your truck somewhere it won’t get banged up too bad. From there mount your 12V compressor either under the hood or behind the back seat (they don’t make a lot of noise) and run the hot line to the tank. Plumb all of your accessories into the tank: air bag control, Quick coupler for air hose. Just make sure you maintain the PSV and the automatic shut off switch so you don’t blow the whole works up.

Just make sure to put the compressor in the engine bay. I had one mounted on the chassis and it died within a week of exposure to road salt.

Moved it to the engine bay and it's been going for years now.

I chatted with a fella years back who had mounted an air compressor in his class A, mounted the actual tank back underneath out of the way and the rest of the goodies in a compartment, readily accessible.

On my jeep and my ford diesel I installed the Viair PN/ 10009. Had good luck with both. They are not cheap and overkill for airbags but worked will with big tires. The only bad is the compressor needs to be installed in an area that is well protected from the elements. I installed the tank on the inside of the frame rail and the quick connect for the coil hose in the rear bumper.
