For a canoe/kayak or two, smaller dinghy, a c-clamp style setup will work. BUT, if you truly want to use the full capacity of a rack like this, ie 500-700+ lbs, or as I do upwards of 1500-2000 lbs. bolt the fool thing to the bed! Otherwise, you are asking for trouble.........do not ask how I know! Other than to say, I found out the hard way!
