I can tell you from experience heavy towing does take its toll in wear and tear.
I have towed my 25 ft. TT with 750 lbs. on the tongue, over 35,000 miles in four years with my F-150 at it max cargo limit, it tows just fine.
However, brakes and shocks have had to be replaced and I have no excess cargo capacity. On the other hand, brakes and shocks and routine maintenance on an F-150 are less expensive than on a F-250. Plus the non-towing mileage is much better.
If you tow a lot of miles, go for bigger. If you do not do a lot of day to day miles, go for bigger. If you do your own maintenance, go for bigger. If your wife, partner or friend does not mind the lack of ride comfort, go for bigger.
I will say that when we tow my wife is fine with our F-150, she will even drive if I need a break. But around town she thinks it rides like an old stage coach and wishes she had deck hands to cast off the lines when she back the ore barge out of the garage. :)
Take care
