First, people tend to underestimate weights. Their body, their cargo, and especially all the RVing/camping/toys we all take. So typical RVers add about 1000pounds over dry weights before adding a full tank of fresh water, which could be another 300-500 pounds. There are several truck ratings you should consider when towing an RV. Payload as people mentioned is a very common limit for RVers that is exceeded well under the tow ratings of today's half tons. Where did you get:
"The curb weight of the truck with 2 passengers and no cargo is 5500 lbs"
and what is the GVWR? The Ford/Firestone debacle brought legislation in North America that requires vehicle manufacturers to list the weight as the vehicle left the factory as so few people purchase the base/no option models. You can locate this sticker for your truck's as equipped payload on the driver's door or B pillar:

Take off about 850 pounds for estimated trailer TW. Is the rest enough for people and say 200 pounds of stuff in the truck bed? I suspect you are in the right ballpark.
