Listen to the old school guys when they are talking about 'old school trucks.' Otherwise, look at what the mfgr ratings say, weigh your setup and make sure you're good to go. An 8 spd hemi isn't very old school!
Really, it is meaningless and somewhat ignorant to state that "1/2 ton trucks" are only good up to a certain level. There is a huge variance as far as what "1/2 ton trucks" are rated at, at least in the last few years of production. Some 1/2 ton trucks couldn't tow 7500 lbs with reliability; others are engineered to do it without a problem.
I'm with the others that think that the gearing won't be a problem. For example, my current Suburban w/ 3.42 gears tows much better than my last one w/ 4.10 gears. The reason is the 6 spd transmission. In the old 4 spd w/ 4.10, it really only had 2 usable gears when towing (2nd & 3rd). Couldn't hold 4th hardly ever, and 1st was too low for anything at speed. In comparison, my '10 6 spd works through 2-5 when towing, which provides more options for a favorable combination for any condition.
