true hemi gas mileage ?

Looking at a Dodge 2500 series, 5.7 hemi, 373 gear, 4wd, to pull a small travel trailer. Any true life empty gas mileage figures would be greatly appreciated.
  • I got 15mpg combined non towing and 9mpg towing a 7800lbs tt. Not to rain on your parade but it was the worst truck I have ever owned and horrible for towing. It was in the shop at least once a month, 4 transmissions, rust, electrical problems....the list goes on. Needless to say I didn’t keep it long.

Search the 1-2 shift and read on about the complaints. The gear spacing is terrible. Mine was always bogged down even non towing because it always wanted to start out in 3rd gear. You’d have to floor it to accelerate at all but then it would drop 2 gears and lose control. Even worse when towing. Several times I couldn’t get it to accelerate out of 1st gear on hills.

Get a 6.4l with 4.10s and you’ll be much happier. It has cylinder deactivation for better mileage as well.
  • I agree that the 6.4L and 4.10s is the sweet spot for the Ram HD gassers. I have a friend with 5.7L 2500. He is very happy with it. I think most of his towing is around 5000 - 6000 lbs. I dunno about his mileage. My 1500 has the 5.7L and gets around 9 - 10 mpg when towing. Even though I've had it almost 3 years and 36k miles, I'm still learning the empty mileage. On winter 87 octane, I'm getting just under 14 mpg mixed city/highway. Recently refilled half a tank with 91 octane ethanol free and my mileage jumped up to near 16, and performance is wayyy better. My figures are from the lie-o-meter.
  • My 2013 hemi gets 10 mpg towing a 31' fiver, 8600 loaded...light foot, 55-60 mph..it is not a 4wd..but cc, long bed. Solo, about 12-14 around town and about 16-18 on open hiway. 84,000 miles on it and has been good to me.
  • My 2017 2500 6.4 is getting around 12 mixed driving and around 16 on the highway unloaded. Tomorrow is its first tow so I can report back on that tomorrow. I do know it will be a lot less than my Cummins was that I stupidly traded away.
  • I have a 2016 2500 6.4 gets the same as garysol
    Towing I get 10 MPG.
  • 2016 2500 4X4 CC 6.4 Hemi---15.5 highway (75 mph Idaho to Florida and return), 8.5 to 9 mpg towing a 10300 fifth wheel (61 mph).
    Works good.
  • 2014 2500 5.7. I get 18 to 21 flat ground empty doing 60 hwy.
    towing 10,500 5th wheel, 8 to 10 flat ground, 60 hwy.
Last trailer with this truck was 8500 and I got around 2mpg better towing and 20-22 flat ground empty at 60 mpg flat ground. Speed is important for optimum mileage.

That's some serious hyper miling under the best possible conditions to see that kind of empty mileage.
Pre mds 5.7s since the op didn't specify what year or vehicle, is as abysmal as any other HD gasser truck.
Wife's 6.1 and 6.4 chargers can get in the 20s flat highway and low speed. Avg is about 16 for both with much less weight and way better aero.

I find that mileage hard to believe. Was it hand calculated or the lie-o-meter?

The 5.7l in the 2500 doesn't get MDS, only the 6.4l in the 2500 and the 1500s do
  • I agree those numbers are hard to beleive.
My truck is a 2016 Ram 2500 6.4 liter, Big Horn, Crew Cab, 4X4,
    with snow plow pkg.

I might beleive the numbers if you have a regular cab 2 wheel drive stripped down model.
