Lots of nice suggestions, but the OP said "small", which looks to have been missed by many. Thinking "small", unique, I would second the Rockwood Mini Lites. They offer some nice amenities, could easily be towed with a half-ton and the murphy bed gives you some added space when it's stowed.
Have you looked at a Hybrid?? First rule is that you have to love sleeping under canvas and don't mind the extra little jobs that come with that. They are smaller, lighter weight and unique....you'd be surprised at the folks who took a look at ours and said how great it looked, but "what are those things on the front and back?". Tow small, open up much roomier. We loved our ROO.
Once you get into that 26'+ range, you've just moved near the top of the weight for a half ton truck, allowing for wiggle room. You can get a ROO 23SS, opened up you have approx. 30' of living space, loaded and ready to go we were at 5000#, great layout. Well within his towing specs.
