Tub walls

I'm new to travel trailers just bought my first one I noticed my travel trailer doesn't have a tub surround should I worry about this and install one myself or just watch it and wipe walls after each use and maybe apply some type of spray wax on the vinyl wall covering thanks in advance
  • I am not qualified to answer since I am all thumbs with construction things, but I do have a question. Is there a shower? If so, the walls should already be designed to be "wet". What age is the trailer? When you say wipe it after each use, again - is this after a shower or a tub bath? If you have a shower and the walls don't have sufficient material for water deflection you really should put some surround material in. I am sure others will give you some sound advice. Good luck.
  • We have a "Shub" (shower of a tub) in our travel trailer and we always just wipe down the walls after use. We have a small towel which we keep for this purpose.

  • I know some brands do not have tub or shower surrounds and would assume that the wallcovering is supposedly sufficient. However.....not being one to gamble on having a nasty looking wall, I'd suggest a trip to Lowe's or HD and invest. Can't imagine how that wallcovering is going to hold up using bathroom cleaner to remove soap film or spots. If the tub/shower has a lip that goes up the wall an inch or two, you wouldn't need to caulk that....just the top and side edges. Ours in our ROO and also our TT were left uncaulked to allow for moisture that may creep in to drain out.
  • I just didn't take chances. If it doesn't come with some type of surround, I passed on the rig. Having water on wallpaper just didn't make sense to me, especially with water intrusion such a damaging problem in TTs. Even with caulk, I was concerned with it wicking past it, so I just skipped anything without some type of surround.

A lot of rigs were designed to be as cheap as possible, so anything past the "doesn't catch fire in dealer lot" stage of quality is not something one should assume.
  • Mine doesn't have a surround either. This week, doing some preventative maintenance and winterizing, I notice a wet spot under the tub. My shower walls are a linoleum like on the floors. The seal around the tub was a trim piece with butyl tape where it screws to the wall to keep water from dripping between the tub and wall. I removed the trim pieces and siliconed the area around the tub. I used a whole tube of silicone and got it between the wall the tub really well. Then I got new butyl tape and reinstalled the trim.

With respect to cleaning, just wipe it down and periodically check under the tub for any leaks.
  • Wow! I visited many dealers in the past year and looked at dozens. All had shower surrounding surface. I think they are essential to avoid future problems. My 2 cents
  • Last RV had wallpaper. Never had an issue in the 3 years we owned the trailer.
  • If in doubt about the wall being moisture / water proof.....Get one of those shower curtains that go around the whole shower are. Covers all 3 walls.
