Tundra and Windjammer 3008W - any experience?

Hi There!

I'm thinking about a 2015 Rockwood Windjammer 3008W.

Currently have a 2009 Tundra Crewmax 5.7 liter TRD 4X4 as a TV.

All the specs show that the Tundra can handle this trailer, but I'd appreciate anyone that has had any experience with this pairing?

Cheers and thanks in advance!

  • Personally, too much trailer (length and weight) for a Tundra irregardless of ratings. I love my Tundra and they are a nice truck. When I first got it, I pulled our old 29' Sunline with it a few times, and the Sunline weighed in around 8K loaded with personal gear, food, etc. The Tundra pulled it ok, but you really knew it when hitting the hills of Ohio. Pulling our Minnie @ 6400 lbs. seems to be an ideal weight....truck has enough power in the mountains, and much less straining of the powertrain. Personal opinion...a Tundra would be good up to around 7K if you plan on doing some traveling and driving in the mountains.

If you look at the dry weight of the 3008W, you are starting out at 7,038 lbs. and that may not include added options. Loaded, you'll probably be at 8K or so.
Can the Tundra pull that weight...yes!! And you will probably have a lot of replies advising you that it's not a problem. But it will come at a cost (IMHO) and not be a combination that you will be happy with. My suggestion is to find something that starts out at 6K and will end up @7K loaded.

Or, if you really like that trailer, go for it as long as you have the option of trading in the Tundra if you don't like the towing performance. You don't want to be faced with the problem of selling a brand new trailer....too much of a financial loss.
  • I towed a 27' TT with my 07' Crewmax (5.7L) and it towed OK. It had the power no problem but there was some sway and when it was windy there were some scary times. The other issue was my brakes, I went through warped rotors a lot. And I used my tranny down mountains. I heard other Tundra owners had brake and rotor issues as well so I hope that issue was corrected. I loved the Tundra as a daily driver but once I went to a Chevy 3500 Duramax diesel, I've actually enjoyed pulling my 5th wheel.
  • Payload is good. Rated between 1350 - 1590 lbs. with trailer tongue at 720 that leaves me about 600 lbs at the bottom end of the rating for a couple people, gas and a few things in the bed.
  • You're looking at 1100 lbs of tongue weight. Be sure before you make a final decision.
  • All the technical specs show that the tundra can technically haul this trailer, I'm just looking for anyone's real life experience in towing this combination.

Experience regarding sway, power, or anything else that came to mind while pulling this setup.

For conversation sake, it's primarily my wife and I and sometimes our daughter.
  • We know it can pull it, but like most 1/2 ton trucks the lack of payload is where the issues lie. If there is enough payload left to carry about 15% of TT's GVWR you're good to go. Very nice model, hope it all works out for you weight-wise.
  • Crewmax - how many people are you hauling, and what's the payload rating?
  • What's the real tongue weight of the trailer and what is your payload rating? Checking out the specs listed by FR it appears you are looking at 1100 lbs of tongue weight (.13 x 8550). Payload is therefore a real concern if staying within spec is desirable to you.
