I think the direct injection on the EcoBoost is a big step forwards. Do the Chevy and Dodge cylinder dropping engines use direct injection? I do not believe they do (feel free to correct me) so to me they are not nearly advanced as the Ford and don't have near the future potential.
Direct gasoline injection was invented here. Isuzu was the first to
my knowledge to offer a production ICE V6. It was for their truck line
outside North America. This was in the late 90's
Early 2000's had Toyota offer it here, but the injectors had a low GPH.
So supplemented with port inject above a certain RPM/throttle setting
Ditto GM on their Caddy line, but stupid exec's thought such a GREAT
thing...they'd milk it by only allowing it on their high end and kept
if from all others at GM
GM's direction is NOT small displacement (V6) with a turbo, but larger
displacement V8 with direct injection and variable displacement. Less
stress on the bottom end than a small V6 forced fed. GM's V8 can shut
down 4 cylinders to become a V4. Forced fed is an option soon to be
offered, IMHO
You can buy the GM direct injected gasser now. It is a variable
displacement architecture
I do not know if RAM has it, so those who know please chime in
Next gen gasoline after direct injection will be GDICI
