BTW, theses small VW turbo diesels get fabulous MPG....both in city and on the highway. My understanding is that while small hybrid gas/electrics...like the Prius...get tremendous MPG in the city...they're not so hot on the highway....when the gas engine cuts in and has to do the work.
So much so, that many commuters in my neck of the road, go for the VW turbo diesels, to rack up a lot of fuel efficient highway miles.
When my GF and I drove from Oregon to SanFrancisco and back in her Camry hybrid we averaged 38 mpg hand calculated on regular! Small turbo diesels are great and are generally less expensive than hybrids. I would not rule out a hybrid or a small turbo diesel for a daily driver. I am not a Prius fan though, I find them very uncomfortable and harsh on the road. Especially for long trips.
You should try a VW Passat with the turbodiesel. Think these cars are relatively comfortable. The 1.8 TD....think it's rated around 236 ft. lbs. of torque...pretty good for a small 1.8 liter.
