TV mounting

Another newby question ....

Our new camper has a spot marked on the wall that indicates where to mount a TV. The TV weighs 12 pounds. Is a standard wall mount like I'd use in my home adequate?

I'm a little antsy about having a TV hanging from the wall while bouncing down the road in the camper.
  • I put mine against the wall with a small pillow and bungi strap it in place, many miles and lots of dirt roads never a problem.
  • Our first trailer had a 17" TV that's mount could be swung to the wall and bungee'd. No problem.
Last trailer we had a 32", and even though I made the wall mount indestructable, I removed the TV and laid it on the front queen bed for every move. Not that big a deal....30 seconds of my time.

  • I run a 23" television on a tilting / rotating arm style mount on the side of my cupboard. I just tighten it so the arm can rotate during travel. Never been a problem.
  • I put one in the back room (4 bunk model) it had the plug and coax outlet there. I used a stud finder to find the aluminum stud. You can also feel for the stud by pushing on the flimsy Masonite wall. I marked the center. Then I used a tiny finishing nail to poke a hole on both sides of the stud to make absolutely certain I was on each side of the stud thus getting perfect center. I drilled into the stud and then used slightly bigger self tapping screws about 1/4 inch wide and 1 in length. I put the permanent lock tight on them. I mounted a regular bracket like at home. The small brackets only use two bolts in the center. The TV is a 21 inch and weighs about 10 lbs. It's solid, been up for 2 years and I drive with it up.

Yes, a standard home mount of your choice will work. If the spot is marked for a TV mount, it normally will have reinforcement behind it.
  • Here's a couple photos from my last trailer (Springdale) and how I mounted the television in the bed room. When we bought our new Outback, I removed the bracket and hung it in the new bedroom on the wall that says "mount TV here". I don't have a photo of that however, but it's the same bracket.

This solution works very well for us, because the part that attaches to the television simply lifts off the part that's attached to the wall, and the television rides on the bed when in transport. It just rests on the bracket. There are 2 catches on the bottom to secure it in, but we never use that. This eliminates ALL concern about the television bouncing and breaking down the wall or falling too.

  • Usually they've placed some back boards behind that marking. Use lag screws and you'll know if you're hitting studs or backer boards. Don't mount it to the luan alone or it will certainly fall off.

On my TV mounts, I installed a drawer pull behind the TV on the wall and I use long strips of stretchy velcro to secure the TV to the wall while traveling. This keeps the darn thing from swinging all over while towing. You can buy the strapping in the hardware section at Lowes.
  • Thanks for all the responses. If I use a wall mount, I'll add a way to bungie it still while moving.
