Twist lock cord vs standard

My TT has the twist lock power cord with the locking ring at the power inlet (30amp). The connection isn't as tight as it used to be and it's felt warm to the touch the last few trips out. I'd like to replace the female end on the cord, or even buy a new cord and make an extension cord out of the original. My question is with the twist lock. This one has gotten sloppy. Is it better than a standard plug with a locking ring? I'm not opposed to changing the inlet on the TT to match. My original is a straight plug and I like the 90degree plugs if I were to switch it.

Not me. I did the opposite. Our 2006 Sunline came with a detachable 30A cord and 10 years without a problem. Our new Arctic Fox came hard wired. One of my first mods was to convert it to a detachable cord, eliminating the mouse hole. One less possible entry point for little critters and insects.

Yep, I had a mouse use the cord on my old one as a way into the trailer. That little trap door thingy wont stop them, they will chew it out to a size that allows them right in. In my case they literally did it in one night.

I will be modifying my brand new trailer to a detachable very soon. Critter entry denial aside, I will not miss having to fight and untwist the cord while pulling it out of the compartment every time.

I don't know exactly what you have but maybe there's a 90 degree dongle available that would fit your inlet and cord. That would maybe forestall a new inlet and new cord purchase.

Those are available, but I want to replace what I have. Figure I'll use the old cord for an extension by replacing the female end.

I am in the minority, but I don't want a 30 amp connection in a wall. As you learned, they can have issues and heating right there among thin plywood and styrofoam is the last thing you want. I hard wired mine and did away with the problems.

  • There are standards that should be followed for 120V. 15 amp, 20amp, 30 amp are all different. To save confusion and for safety, I'd replace both worn cable and wall connectors with original configuration.
