I do think, however, that any of the newer gas engines (Ford 6.2, GM 6.0, Dodge 6.4) coupled with the modern 6+ speed transmissions have more than enough power and ability to handle any size truck camper you would dare to put on the truck. Looking at my truck the GCWR is 22,500 pounds so the 14,000 pound truck and camper isn't anywhere close to the rating limit the engine can handle.
You nailed it! And that's the exact reason I'll be buying a gasser (or even cab and chassis) dually when my old bus finally wears out.
10 years ago I was a diehard diesel fan, and wouldn't even look at a gas truck. But modern emissions complexity means you'll never recoup the cost of the diesel, even considering resale value.
My ideal truck is a bare bones regular cab dually, with roll-up windows and rubber floor. I'm a single guy with no family, and simply want a reliable "base camp" when out riding dirt bikes with friends. A combo like that would give me 7000+ lbs payload, enough for a big camper like yours plus a trailer full of bikes/gear/fuel.
