In the event my Cummins (3.73 gears) would have to downshift from 6th to 5th (rare I imagine) the RPMs would maybe hit 2200-2400 RPM. Your Ford shifting from 6th to 5th to 4th had to see at least 4000+ RPMs.
Don't know about the 4.3, but not even close with the 3.73. I run about 1600 RPM at cruise, 5th goes somewhere around 1900-2000 and 4th maybe 24-2600. The highest RPM I ever go is about 3600, but I do let the speed tail off a bit when it gets really steep to preserve fuel when possible.
As the current owner of a diesel SUV that I have used for towing a TT, the biggest disadvantage with the gasser truck is the MPG and definitely not with the comfort factor relating to RPM, which isn't much different. We were getting 14.5MPG with the diesel towing, and that is 45% better. Definitely hurts at the pump, but everything is a tradeoff.
