Maybe the Powerstroke gets terrible mileage like that Ford V8 but my 2014 cummins loaded to a Gross Weight of about 12000-12500 averages 11.5-12mpg on 3-4000 mile trips from Louisiana to the southern Rockies. That includes 75mph roads from here to colorado (1000 miles each way) and multiple passes in CO. I don't see 30% better fuel economy at a higher speed as negligible. That's a considerable difference. 80 gallons more over 3000 miles. Couple that with the considerable power advantage and the built in exhaust brake which make for effortless driving in any condition and the diesel is a no brainer for me. Especially when it does it with a 3.23 rear end that gives me 20mpg at 70mph empty.
Reports of mileage and abilities for different motors are great, but saying that it's a better option than a diesel is just funny.
