Congrats Don,
I think the Dodge 1500 with the 3.0 liter turbo diesel is one of the possibly most significant trucks on the market. I say significant, because a full size half ton, with a smaller turbo diesel is something many have been clamoring for...for a number of years. Myself included.
Like others I'm interested in finding out what the real world MPG, acceleration is....solo and at maximum tow rating.
Trucks with turbo powered, smaller gas engines are also interesting. But I do think the future may possibly be, with the small turbo diesel in 150/1500 series light trucks.
Reason I think this, is the greater potential for better MPG with a turbodiesel, as opposed to a similar displacement turbo gas engine.
Issues such as engine durability...diesel vs gas...I don't think are as relevant as they once were. My view is that both gas and diesel engines...durability wise... in today's trucks are not that different. They're both real good.
For most driver's if you can get 150-200K + miles, relatively trouble free life on a new pickup....well for most driver's of new trucks...that's more than enough. Second and third owner/drivers would have a different opinion, I'm sure.
Another reason I'm pro small turbo diesel vs small gas-turbo engine is that in Europe, the small diesel turbo engine seems to dominate sales in vehicles. Of course Europe has much higher fuel prices then we in North America enjoy.
As North American fuel costs continue to spiral upward, I think it's just a matter of time before the market starts looking for more fuel efficient....but also...powerful engine choices.
In NA, where we have vast distances to cover, lot's of rural compared to urban areas...compare to Europe... we need and want power. Particularly when towing.
Anyways, Don let us know how your new turbo diesel does, during your ownership.
