But it's not just the HP difference. The diesel is inherently more efficient. If you compared a diesel with 360hp against the EcoB at 360hp, in the same truck, the diesel would be more fuel efficient.
From what I can tell, the even big diesels in the 250/2500s can get about the same unloaded mileage as I do with the EcoB, and can get 25% better mileage when towing.
Yep, my current diesel rig hauling around 2,000 more lbs gets 19 to 20 mpg on average with my 60/40 city/highway duty cycle. My 2010 F-150 weighing less and having only 310 HP with its 5.4 only got 15 - 16 mpg on the same duty cycle. My understanding from being a Ford Forum member and entertaining upgrading to an ecoboost, my MPG would had just remained the same for my driving and configuration.
However, the issue I've personally had with the ecoboost moniker is that it is truly eco or boost. However, the dealerships and such really hyped up its mpg performance when it's at best a 5% (maybe 10%) improvement over the previous Triton 5.4 motor. Fantastic marketing on Ford's part, however I find it deceptive on a personal level. The Power delivery and performance however are definitely to be commended over the motors they replace.
