Yup again. My vehicle with 2.0 L turbo, DI, gas, 220 hp is EPA rated at 23 mpg combined. Same vehicle, same transmission with 3.0 L TDI, 240 hp is rated at 27 mpg combined.
And the engine option is how many thousand more?
And diesel is what, 15% more expensive?
At least on your vehicle you aren't buying a power loss.
Bias is fairly predictable based on peoples purchases. That being said, I don't own an Ecoboost...... ;-)
Nope. The conversation, at that stage anyway, was about mileage vs HP, diesels vs gassers.
Costs were not being considered just then.
But you're right, in some parts of the world diesel is more expensive. But not where I live. And the diesel engine is always more expensive to begin with, and there's the ongoing cost. I suspect for many it's more a "life-style" choice thn a financial one.
For some, the taste of raw thrashing torque off of idle, with a VNT turbo that is already spooled up and barely on boost at idle, that comes with a long stroke diesel engine, is intoxicating, regardless of engine premium price, or operating costs.
A diesel with a turbo charger runs boost and power where I run my motor, all the time, but only if I need it. The rest of the time, it's mild mannered, meek, and sips fuel not cut with corn oil or alcohol. I'll pay that engine premium any day of the week, I have been since 1981 when I bought my first diesel, a 1981 Jetta Coupe Diesel.
