For some, the taste of raw thrashing torque off of idle, with a VNT turbo that is already spooled up and barely on boost at idle, that comes with a long stroke diesel engine, is intoxicating, regardless of engine premium price, or operating costs.
A diesel with a turbo charger runs boost and power where I run my motor, all the time, but only if I need it. The rest of the time, it's mild mannered, meek, and sips fuel not cut with corn oil or alcohol. I'll pay that engine premium any day of the week, I have been since 1981 when I bought my first diesel, a 1981 Jetta Coupe Diesel.
Heh. I loved my 2005 Passat TDI. Great tow machine for our tent trailer. Still in the family too, purring around out west.
One of these days I might get another diesel for our current trailer. Sadly, the RAM EcoD is just not enough truck for that TT. Maybe I'll win the lottery and get a Big diesel. Or maybe we'll get a smaller trailer (nah, that'll never happen). We'll see ...
