Thanks for the info. Besides my Pontiac I did drive a auto 460, 15 passenger van. With a couple thousand lbs load it was miserable to drive because of the hunting. Same thing with a Dodge van with a 360. But these were over 20 years ago.
Of course you are correct no engine should be lugged. I just want to make sure those lock out features really do work. I am really considering going to a automatic when I do buy.
At what speed does the trans lock up clutch shut off. For instance if you are going down a steep grade coming up to a hair pin turn. Will the clutch stay locked up so that the exhaust break will work. My brother had a auto 90's Dodge. It would unlock at 35 miles per hour I believe. He installed a aftermarket lock up controller. It helped a lot but still not as good as a manual.
