The reviewers and owners paint a more contrasting picture.

In contrast, ED owners routinely report mpg's better than the epa rating.
This guy got 11mpg pulling a load lighter and more aero than mine. I get >14mpg. http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2014/09/can-the-ford-f-150-2-7-liter-really-tow/index.htm
There's a guy in another forum with an ED. His dad has a EB. They've done all sorts of interesting tests between the two. The EB power always shines, but the ED gets 30-40% better mpg.
The price difference of fuel in your images is misleading. I'm certainly not going to tow with 87octane, instead I'll pay a little more and get 89 because the engine will be under more load than usual. Also, one has to shop around a little more for diesel to get a good price. The "average" diesel price isn't as meaningful for diesel as it is for gas. Within a mile of my house gas prices vary by ~15cents, but diesel varies by 60cents. So if you shop a little harder for diesel you can significantly reduce the delta in fuel costs between the two truck.
