Just2Shy,
I've read many threads from you mentioning the fragile CP4.2 HPFP when it comes to the Ford and GM trucks, but I've yet to see you mention it during a Ecodiesel discussion. Is there a reason?
Not really, actually I did forget about that! It certainly is something to be watched though. I did search through my old posts and found this, and I think it's where I'm at right now:

The fuel pump will cost more (Bosch CP4). And the turbocharger is currently a mystery. All I know is that it's going to be far smaller than the snail on my diesel and probably bigger than 1 of the snails on the Ecoboost since it only uses 1 turbo. I believe that this will be "Bust out the lawn chairs, crack open a cold one and see how it all unfolds" type of deal until the new engine drops and we start finding the weak points and the costs to repair them.
Also, if you have a link to a good technical article that dissects the ecodiesel as it is in FCA's use, I'm more than happy to read it. The turbo is still a total mystery to me and I have no idea who makes it.
Also, found out that I was worried back then over the CP4 in that post:

(edit) I did read an article on the VM Motori 3.0 and it is a neat mill. From the article, it looks like it actually is a little old-school for a new diesel. Namely surprised that the injectors are solenoid actuated (that ought to cut injector prices to less than half). However I am still worried about the Bosch CP4 pump it'll use, again similar to VWs, Fords and Duramaxes. I wish they coulda just stuck with the CP3 but apparently it doesn't put out enough pressure. I earnestly hope that this engine turns out to be a cheaper lighter-duty class of diesel like the VW diesels. Looking at how low the premium is for the VM Motori motor, I'd assume that it'd cost only 1 or 2 grand over a gas engine if the engine ever needed to be swapped. This would be a far smaller specter to fear than the current 12k+ price that HD diesel motors command.
The thread it came from I thought this was a fun and deep forum debate over diesel vs. gas and how to deepen the analysis for parts costs and taking into account your region's fuel costs and such. The Ecodiesel will not make sense for everyone. Especially if you're in the northeast.
