I'd go with those Bosch solenoid injectors any day over Bosch Piezo injectors. The Bosch solenoid injectors have been run in the 2012 2013 and 2014 Passat TDIs now for 3 years with folks having 100k miles on them, and the failure rate has been almost non existent. The Passat runs the CP4-1 and it too, at 1800 bars has had extremely low HPFP failure rates also. Two factors that I have seen on TDI club that stand out for Bosch CP4.X HPFP failures, in all the VW and Audi lines... running Shell diesel fuel and running Valero diesel fuel seems to be a common denominator for eaten alive Bosch HPFP's.
Personally, I've noticed the least amount of HPFP failures occurring on Conoco, Phillips 66, Sinclair and Unocal 76 brand diesel fuels. Very, very hard for me to find Bosch HPFP failures on this brand of diesel fuel west of the Rockies.
YMMV, these have been my observations in countless hours of research on TDI club, trying to find a commonality for the failures. Quality of lubrication in diesel fuels does vary. If you want a little piece of mind, don't hammer on the throttle on and off, roll your foot into and out of it gently on these HPFP's, trailing throttle fuel pressures on these is absolutely brutal load and pressure wise on these pumps, and always supplement your fuel with a pint of biodiesel per 12 gallons of fuel pumped into your fuel tank, at a minimum, a qt per 12 gallons would be better.
You advocate using a diesel additive with cetane or something like that in the ED? I'd used some in my old truck, but I kinda had the impression that the ED might be picky about that sort of thing.
Biodiesel is NOT diesel additive. It is fuel. Fuel extender to be exact. And as a fuel extender and/or substitute fuel, it also has a quality of adding back lubricity lost in refining diesel fuel to ULSD 15ppm of sulfur or less. History of diesel fuel from 5000ppm to 500 ppm sulfur(LSD) to 15ppm sulfur(ULSD)
