I don't claim any knowledge to verify Ram *is* doing so, but it's an easy enough task for the PCM to compute actual GCW given it knows torque applied and resulting rate of acceleration.
It's very easy to determine amount of work being done by logging fueling consumption rates, speed of travel, having XYZ axis meters to measure slope and grade, and logging fueling consumption rates at varying speeds, over total miles traveled per trip. All of that data gets stored in my VW Touareg, ever since RAM (computer ram memorty) got cheap and affordable. It all gets logged in a black box. I am certain it is being stored in the RAM truck also. Diesel fuel generates so many kcal per gallon, so consumption rate measures work done, in how many miles, up how many vertical feet. I wouldn't be surprise if they have topo maps and gps logging what you drive up and down either.
You can run, but you can no longer hide, the Play Boys with their tuners and yanking them before going in for service when something failed are over with. Bosch does not play that game any more. They will catch you if you do a tune, the checksum is no longer correct and gets stored, permanently. Results? Warranty void. Look up "TD1" code under VW or Audi on Google, they all run Bosch fueling systems.
If you are going to play, you're going to pay, with these diesels. They will catch you. Not RAM, but Bosch. But Bosch shares with RAM how to retrieve the logs and data. Game Over.
