With our old 2005 Passat diesel, I was told it's best to get it out there and drive it, carefully, to get the heat up.
With the Ontario winters, our best investment with that car was not a block heater, but a electric coolant heater that got heat into the cab and onto the windshield almost instantly when you started up.
Further north, when they may not have electricity, they install diesel fuel heaters in their diesel trucks.
