So the owners manual says " we recomend ", it does not say " required ", does this mean you can use other oils?
No, you can not use other oils in this motor... it is made in Italy, and requires a European spec Low SAPS 800ppm or less motor oil. Mobil 1 ESP IN THE ONE LITER, not quart bottles, will meet the spec. Any motor oil that is VW 507.00 and also MB 229.51 will meet the spec. The MOPAR spec is identical to the MB 229.51, ever since Fiat bought out the MB portion of Chrysler with the Sprinter van Series of turbo diesels. It's a very, very tough specification to be certified otfor.
Due to the DPF burn off cycles doing regenerations on the pistons exhaust stroke, and jacking the temps of the exhaust under light load over 1100F, the oil has a very high flash temperature to prevent burn of of motor oil film left in the bore during regenerations, something almost all other motor oil bases are missing... this burnt off oil ends up as ash in your DPF, so it is exceedingly important to use the correct motor oil in this type of motor with this particular style and type of exhaust treatment system. Foul the exhaust system, and you'll have a very fat replacement bill again.
The motor oil has to be low Sulfated Ash, Phosphurus and Sulfur "SAPS" rated motor oil, and almost invariably, it is blended oil base from German stock oil of types 3, 4 PAO and 5 Ether based synthetics. I've seen some of it also out of Belgium and Austria also
Total, Ravenol, Pentosin, Elf, LubriMoly, Mobil 1 ESP Euro 5w-30 all meet this specification.
Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5w-30 with C3 oil rating.
Look for the C3 specification.
Total Quartz INEO 5w-30 5 liter jug
There's some threads at BobIsTheOilGuy and a good write-up by the in-house oil guy at TurboDieselRegister. Cliffnotes: Don't get your panties in a wad.
